Shorebased certificate courses

In 2009 the Irish Sailing Association produced an entirely new set of charts, exercises and course material for the Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased courses. The intention was to offer courses that would be specifically relevant to anyone sailing in Irish waters as well as further offshore.

The courses are fully supported by the new ISA full colour 150 page Yachtmaster Shorebased course notes.

The ISA Yachtmaster training Almanac, using extracts from Reeds Nautical Almanac and the Irish Cruising Club Sailing Directions, provides sufficient information to complete all the course assessments. The only extras you will need are a plotting instrument, such as a Breton plotter, and dividers.

Some schools offer courses over just a week or two; although it makes good financial sense for the school, it is simply not possible to complete a Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore shorebased course successfully in this short time.

Each course includes a number of assessments which you complete at home in your own time; they play a key part in the learning process as through them you and your instructor become aware of any misunderstanding you may have of the subject.

Our Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore courses are an enjoyable way of passing one night a week of the winter building your knowledge and making new friends who share a common interest.

Sea~Craft has been running the Irish Sailing Association Yachtmaster Coastal, Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean shorebased courses for more than 20 years. We run our Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased courses in the Royal St. George Yacht Club, in Dun Laoghaire, on one night a week during the winter months starting towards the end of September and finishing around the end of February. You do not have to be a club member - all are welcome .

These shorebased courses are often called navigation courses but they should more correctly be thought of as seamanship courses as they deal not only with navigation but with many of the other important aspects which combine to make cruising safe and enjoyable. The shorebased courses are intended for sail and power.

We run our Yachtmaster Ocean shorebased course over 6 full days, usually 6 consecutive Saturdays or Sundays, as this is a course which benefits from being run in this manner. Alternatively we will run it in one week over six days if sufficient people wish; this is ideal for those who need the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean course completion certificate to comply with the MCA unlimited commercial certificate . The Yachtmaster Ocean course is the only course which can be run to comply with both the RYA and the ISA requirements. Sea~Craft is both an ISA and RYA recognised training centre and so can issue both ISA and RYA Yachtmaster Ocean shorebased course completion certificates to those who complete the course and exam.
